A package of 16 cards and envelopes. "The White House Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, December 1941" is one of a series of Christmas Cards published by the White House Historical Society. "On Christmas Eve 1941, just weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entry into World War II, the traditional lighting of the national community Christmas Tree was held at the White House. The stirring speeches of Winston S. Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain and Franklin D. Roosevel, President of the United States, broadcast by radio to a national and worldwide audience, assured listeners that the sacrifice, daring, and resolve of freedom-loving peoples everywhere would win the war and 'preserve all that we hold dear.' Despite tight wartime security, thousands attended a joyous ceremony that began with a concert by the Marine Band and included caroling around the illuminated tree. After that momentous night a Christmas Tree would not be lit again on the White House grounds for the during of the war." Painting by Tom Freeman 2002.
